About ONRAMP – Reading

with No Comments

ONRAMP for Adults is a site that strives to help adults learn how to read, write and speak English. Maybe you know how to read, but need to improve your current writing or speaking skills, this could also be the site for you. ONRAMP works with students that are 18 to 100+ years old and live in the valley west of Phoenix, Arizona. These cities include Avondale, Buckeye, Cashion, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Luke AFB, Tolleson, Tonopah and any employee from Macy’s Fulfillment Distribution Center in Goodyear.

Adults in this program will learn skills that they may not have used before to break down new words, that they may come across while reading. During the lessons, students will be shown symbols that will help them read big, little, easy and hard words. I want all students to come into the virtual classroom relaxed and ready to read, write and practice their speaking skills.Street symbols to be read

As more days and times open up, I will be able to help more adults in more cities in the state of Arizona, with their quest to become better readers, writers and speakers.

Reading classes for Adults – Would you like to Learn How to Read?

As a Reading Specialist in a local elementary school, I learned that reading is not just seeing the whole word, but it also has to do with knowing the sounds of each letter of that word. The more I sounded out the words to help the children, the more I realized how important it was to start with knowing the sound of those letters.

During the time I tutored adults in the Avondale literacy program, I could see how not being sure of the letter sounds of the words, made it very hard for adults to read. However, after practicing and doing the homework, the adult students became more confident and were able to read, write and speak with more confidence. Since knowing the letter sounds are so vital, we will work on alphabet sounds at the very beginning of the lessons. Remember some of the letters have more than one sound. This is something that is very important to know, especially when you are seeing the word for the first time.

Learning how to read allows you to see the world in a different light. You can read the directions and warnings on medicine bottles, read stories to your child or grandchild, cook a special meal using a new recipe, play a new game on the computer/phone or take a stroll through the book store or the library.

Your writing and your speaking skills improve, because their is a connection to the words you are reading.

Learning to be a good reader takes practice

Can you make mistakes, while you are learning to read at ONRAMP for adults? Yes, you can! Making mistakes is what I consider a very important part of learning. At ONRAMP, a mistake is not seen as something bad or negative, but as a way of getting the words you are trying to read right. It takes practice to listen to the words that make different sounds than you are used to reading and hearing. It also takes patience saying those words over and over, to get the accent and the syllable breakdown correct.

Many of the students at ONRAMP, will be at level one ‘beginner’ or level two ‘pre-intermediate’. Do not try to figure out your level. Everyone will be tested before class starts and everyone will start at the beginning of the lessons. Yes, that means starting at level one, but your homework may be different.

angry faceDon’t be upset with starting al level one. Many of these assignments may be easy for you.  There is nothing wrong with already knowing some of the words, knowing how to speak them or how to write them, however you will have to be patient while others may need to learn them, too.  We will get to words and sounds that you may not know.  When this happens, you want the other classmates to be patient, while you learn these new words.  Patience and respect are very important when learning something new.

Will all Classes be offered Online?

This is a very good question. The answer is yes. All the classes will be taught online and we will meet on a platform. This information will be given to you every week with the link that you will need to use.  The classes will be 55 minutes long.  The last five minutes will be for discussing your homework and answering any questions that you may have on the homework. That makes the total time one hour for the class. The homework, game pieces, alphabet and any other paperwork will be sent to you by email.  If there are any questions, you will be able to ask them before the class is over.

Of course, there will be online classroom rules. While all of you terrific students will be ready for class, there will be some rules that are just for an online computer class. These rules will be given to you, after payment and before you start the class.  I also want you to be comfortable and participate as much as possible, which is why these rules will be reviewed in our first class.

You will always be free to email me with any questions that come up after class.

Are you Ready to Read, Speak and Write?

Are you ready to improve your reading, speaking and writing skills at ONRAMP? Here are some important items to remember.

The classes will be adjusted to meet the needs of the students. There will be a soft syllabus.

For example: If two people are having trouble with reading words that have the ‘ie’ combination and one student is having trouble reading words with the ‘ough’ sounds, then the next lesson will have extra words with those problem areas in there for practice. If we need to practice those same areas again, before moving on, we will do that and then add more on to it.

Every potential student will fill out an ‘About You Form’ with basic information, such as their reason for wanting to be in ONRAMP, school level completed, job and future goals. Students will also be able to suggest times and days that are best for them to attend the class. If six or more people want the same time and day, the class will be for that day and time.  Days that are open for classes are Tuesday night, Wednesday night and Thursday night.  If there are a lot of students, more days of the week will be added at a later date.  Students will be notified when more days become open.

You will receive class and computer information once your payment is complete.

Payments can be made using a credit or debit card.  You will receive a receipt when the transaction is complete.
Payments paid to ONRAMP are not refundable.

Classes are for 6 weeks.

If you are ready to start filling out the information form, let your fingers dance on over to the ‘About You Form.’

If there is a problem with the forms, please email me at onrampforadults.com.  Thank you
